If you like this … but don’t have the energy or time for the walk, consider instead viewing the area from Panorama Point, which is accessed by the same road but requires less than a minute’s walk to reach. Here, you can also check out the Goosenecks of Sulphur Creek from a lofty, though mostly fence-enclosed viewing station. Beneath your feet, this unimposing creek has been slowly meandering for millions of years. Holding its snaking path as the Waterpocket Fold was thrust upward, the creek has eaten its way through several hundred feet of rock.

If you have the desire to grab a bite in town, Red River Ranch’s Cliffstone Restaurant (see Red River Ranch, in “Pick Your Spot,” Torrey and Teasdale, above). Though you may already be staying at the ranch, you’ll need reservations to dine here. Though the ranch may look like an oversized cabin at first glance, it provides some of the finer dining and most luxurious lodging in the area. The menu offers a range of contemporary Western American cuisine, ranging from less spendy (but still delicious) items like buffalo burgers to more pricey and intricate entrées like potato-crusted trout and buffalo tenderloin. Situated on 2,000 private acres, the establishment provides a truly relaxing resort-style experience—even to those just dining there for a few hours.
